Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of legal blidness in the world, and with the growing epidemic of diabetes, the estimated prevalence of any retinopathy among patients with diabetes is around 35% (approximately 93 million people globally). A global increase in the incidence of DR is inevitable, so it is of utmost importance to identify the most cost-effective tools for DR screening According to the American Diabetes Association, the current standard of care is for people with diabetes to have an annual eye exam. However, due to cost and inconvenience, nearly half of those with diabetes are not regularly screened for diabetic retinopathy, putting them at risk of losing their vision. Compliance with these recommendations is low and the burden outpaces current ability of ophthalmologists to perform screening, especially in geographically distant areas.
Deepdee is a software capable of automatically detecting eye disease from retinal images to transform the quality, accessibility and affordability of eye care worldwide through automated diagnostic system. We're developing deepdee for use in the frontlines of care, so that patients with diabetes can have their eyes checked for diabetic retinopathy during routine office visits.
